From Abandoned Hilltop to Thriving Prairie Sanctuary

What started as five scrubby acres of Johnson Grass on a forgotten Oklahoma homestead has quietly become something extraordinary. Over the past two decades, Daniel, a retired contractor, espresso café owner, and Canadian County Master Gardener, and his wife, Ruthie, have hand-built Pugh Prairie Gardens into a living landscape with native flower beds, woodland paths, prairie trails, and cross-timber groves. And they’re just getting started.

Recently expanding to 45 acres of open prairie and cross-timber canyons, Pugh Prairie Gardens is now developing into a full Home-Grown Nature Park, complete with scenic woodland nature trails and, with the generous support of donors, grants, endowments, sponsorships, and individual contributors, a fully operational Nature Center for education, inspiration, and modest group gatherings.

This isn’t just a garden. It’s a mission.

Come See What Oklahoma Can Grow

Picture winding paths through native wildflower beds, the quiet rustle of grasses in a Soapberry grove, and a hilltop view that stretches across prairie you helped restore. That’s a day at Pugh Prairie Gardens.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a photographer, a family looking for a real outdoor experience, or an educator searching for an inspiring field destination, there’s something waiting for you here. Every visit supports prairie restoration, native pollinator habitats, and the long-term vision of a Nature Center that will serve Oklahoma communities for generations.

We’re a certified Wildlife Habitat, Monarch Waystation, and Yard by Yard member and proud recipients of an Okies for Monarchs grant supporting 700 sq. ft. of new native pollinator plantings.
